Happy Leap Day!

For everyone who is an administrator of a Facebook Page for business, you may have noticed a little note at the top of your screen this morning:

Yes, the free service that we can’t live without is making more changes for us to learn. Here’s the rundown…

  • It’s going to look just like our personal pages.

Business/Brand Pages can have a cover photo of at least 399 pixels to stretch across the top of your fans screens. There are some restrictions on these cover photos, though. According to Facebook, cover photos may not contain:

  • Price or purchase information, such as “40% off” or “Download it at our website”
  • Contact information, such as web address, email, mailing address or other information intended for your Page’s About section
  • References to user interface elements, such as Like or Share, or any other Facebook site features
  • Calls to action, such as “Get it now” or “Tell your friends”

Also, these photos are public to all visitors, whether they are fans of the page or not, so special members-only discounts should be hidden behind a Like Gate on a personalized page.

  • Photos, likes and apps are now at the top of your Page.

Photos show in the first spot, but you can change the order of everything else so people see what matters most in your business.

  • You control the importance of content on your page

Hover over a story and click on the star ( star icon ) to make it wider, or on the pencil ( pencil icon ) to pin it to the top of your Page, hide or delete it entirely.

  • You won’t forget to respond to a comment with the new Admin Panel

Keep track of your activity on your Page from the admin panel. Respond when people write on your Page timeline, and view your latest insights. It adds some order to a Page that appears to be more free-form.

  • Respond privately with messages!

If people have a question for you, they don’t have to post it publicly on your Wall anymore. They can send you a private message. This is a great addition to the Facebook Business/Brand Page and I hope that it brings everyone more business in 2012.

Don’t like the changes? Sorry Charlie, it’s going to switch over for everyone effective March 30, 2012. I’ve already switched the Freshly Baked Communications page over – let me know what you think!
