Is watching your Facebook likes number increase like waiting for bread to rise? Have your Twitter followers slowed to a halt? Are you becoming slightly envious of the numbers your competitors have put up (even though they are not getting much feedback on their posts)? I’ll let you in on a little secret…
In the dark alleys of the internet, there are sites that allow you to (gasp!) purchase followers for your page.
Oh, gee! Why would anyone want to purchase followers?
For bragging rights, of course!
Today, your perceived worth online is based on the number of social media followers you have. It’s like your vehicle, your watch and your shoes. If you step out of a Porsche wearing a Cartier and a pair of Salvatore Ferragamos, people may perceive that you are doing well off, in comparison to the individual who checks his Timex, slips on his Clarks and speeds off to a networking event in his Kia (no disrespect if I just described you).
However, looks may be deceiving. Upon closer inspection, you may discover that the Porsche is a rental, the Cartier is really a “Gartier” and the Ferragamo signature is missing from the metal embellishment on the top of the shoe. Nice try, but no Cuban cigar.
Why do business owners feel a need to “fake it until they make it” with the size of their audience on social media? It doesn’t attract real clients. It doesn’t motivate others to buy from you. And, you’re out $25 – $500 to buy thousands of followers that will whittle down to a couple of hundred over the next few weeks or so.
There is no successful overnight way to gain social media followers. You should focus on creating an amazing community of followers who actively engage with you.
My recommendations:
- Talk to the people who want to talk to you. You can do hashtag search on topics related to your business to start conversations, share insight and be social.
- Find your niche and make your posts matter. Don’t post for the sake of posting.
- Post something original and personal. The top posts I’ve had on social media are pictures of me speaking, hosting a unique event or a candid look inside my agency.
How else have you made your mark on the world and achieved online success?
